What do you know about Cusano cigars?

Cusano, the premium cigar brand that has been established in the US market for almost three decades, is known for offering a wide variety of high-quality products at highly competitive prices.

Its creator, Michael Chiusano, an Italian-American born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, doesn't fit the typical cigar maker mold. As he narrates in an interview published by Cigar Aficionado in 2008[1], he founded the company DomRey Cigar Inc., in Bradenton, Florida, obeying a circumstantial impulse rather than a planned action.

The story is interesting: after a trip to the Dominican Republic in 1995, Chiusano brought home a handful of Dominican bandless cigars that he had enjoyed on his trip. He made his own band of cigars with his finance company´s letterhead and gave one to a cigar store owner in Salem, New Hampshire, who thought they were great and said he would keep them all to sell at his business. The Cusano brand, with which most cigars are identified, was born as a phonetic spelling of his last name, because the original is pronounced very differently in English.

Since then, the brand has been recognized by experts and fans for its quality and flavor and, especially, because the price-value ratio of these products is considered to be one of the best in the market. Perhaps for this reason, most of its clients are located in the segment of everyday smokers, rather than in that of occasional smokers.

Since its inception, the manufacture of the cigars was in charge of the manufacturer of Davidoff in the Dominican Republic, Hendrik Kelner, whom Chiusano always considered his mentor. After a brief period during which they opened their own factory, also in the Dominican Republic, the brand was bought in 2009 by the large Swiss company Oettinger Davidoff Group, who was looking to access new distribution channels in the United States.

Michael Chiusano remained at the helm of DomRey Inc. until February 2010, when he announced his departure from the company and his decision to go it alone. During 2014 and 2015, the brand remained inactive until, at the beginning of 2016, the Swiss manufacturer announced a reinvigoration plan, presented a new product and announced others for the future.

Cusano cigars are not only sold in more than 2,000 American stores, but also in several European countries such as Germany, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Romania, and even reach Mexico and Taiwan.
